The Philadelphia Flyers' head coaching search has come to a close. According to Frank Seravalli on X (formerly Twitter), the Flyers are closing in on a deal to make Rick Tocchet the franchise's next head coach.
However, the move is not finalized, as he has to go through the steps in the process. Still, this is a major move for Philadelphia, who has been looking for a recognizable and credible name.
Earlier in the season, the Flyers fired John Tortorella as their head coach. His no-nonsense attitude fit Philadelphia well, but the lack of success was a major culprit.
In three seasons, he never made the playoffs.
On the flip side, Tocchet has had some playoff success. Not to mention, he was a major proponent of helping young teams succeed. In stints with formerly Arizona Coyotes and Vancouver Canucks, he led both teams to playoff berths.
He might have the opportunity to do the same with Philadelphia. They are a rebuilding team and will likely bring in a coach with plenty of experience in that regard.
This might be beneficial for the Flyers, who need a players' coach, and someone who can relate to them.
Rick Tocchet can help the Flyers get back to winning
It might take some time, but Tocchet's track record is promising. As mentioned earlier, he helped the Coyotes and Canucks reach the playoffs.
Both were incredibly young teams, with major promise. Still, he never got the legitimate chance to prove himself. He hasn't had a long stay with either franchise.
Tocchet could quickly become a fan favorite in Philadelphia. Although Tortorella was certainly that, Tocchet's style might be more geared to the current NHL.
He can be tough, but he has the best interests of his players and the team as a whole. Establishing balance is key, it and is one that a young team like Philadelphia can learn.
Either way, after Tocchet parted ways with the Canucks, he quickly found a new home. It might be tough for him if there isn't immediate progress.
However, his track record indicates that a change will come. It might not be overnight, but it will at least be a consistent change for the team.
At the end of the day, a new head coach will take on the challenge of fixing the Flyers. Tocchet has been in these situations before, so this isn't anything new.
Embracing a culture shock could bring a level of optimism and certainty that Philadelphia will be back on the NHL map once again, for all the right reasons.
