In what has to be one of the most shocking signings in recent memory, Jeff Hornacek will be the New York Knicks‘ next head coach.

Despite all signs pointing towards the Knicks retaining Kurt Rambis as head coach, the franchise has gone in an unexpected direction. While there had been news in recent days that the Knicks had interviewed Hornacek, there weren't any reports signaling that the team had a serious interest in the former Phoenix Suns coach.

Not only is this a puzzling addition due to Hornacek's lack of experience with the triangle offense, it's surprising because he doesn't have much of a winning resume to speak of. The highlight of his two-and-a-half seasons was leading the 2013-14 Suns to a 48-34 record, where they fell just shy of a postseason berth.

While he did finish second in Coach of the Year voting during that season, it was all downhill from there. Before he was fired midway through the 2015-16 season, the 53-year-old had compiled a 53-78 record over the last two years.

However, Hornacek does specialize in bringing a fast-paced nature to his teams. The Suns ranked third in pace over the past two seasons before he was fired. The Knicks ranked on the opposite end last season, ranking 25th in pace.

It will be interesting to see how Phil Jackson and Hornacek co-exist considering their different philosophies for how an offense should operate.
