Heading into free agency, the Houston Rockets have at the top of their docket bringing back All-Star point guard Chris Paul on a lucrative long-term deal.
However, there had been the recent suggestion that there was some rising tension around the situation because of the expectation that Paul is eyeing receiving a max contract. According to Sam Amick of USA TODAY Sports, there appears to be no such internal conflict rising toward the pending matter.
As for the recent report from Fox Sports’ Chris Broussard that there are rising tensions between the two sides because Paul wants the full max and isn’t sure if he’ll get it, two people with knowledge of the situation refuted the idea there is any friction between the sides. The people spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.
The Rockets have made it clear that Paul is a huge part of their long-term future, and his performance on the court provided more reason to that notion. It could be argued had he not been injured for the final two games of the Western Conference Finals, Houston could have toppled the Golden Warriors with a prime opportunity to earn an NBA title.
Where things get a bit tricky is that the Rockets will have to be comfortable with the fact Paul will be in his mid-30s making more than $40 million a year. This could be a point in his career where his play has a notable decline where his deal would be deemed being a difficult contract to have on the books.
Given the overall play and tremendous amount of success the franchise had with both Paul and James Harden messing well together while putting them in reach of making the NBA Finals should more than enough for Houston do whatever is necessary to bring him back.
