The South Carolina women's basketball team has added a significant piece to their roster next season with the commitment of Arkansas forward Maryam Dauda in the transfer portal. The 6-foot-4 forward announced her decision to join the national champions on social media Wednesday, marking a boost for the Gamecocks as they look to continue their dominant run following their undefeated, title-winning 2023-24 season.
Dauda spent the past three seasons with the Razorbacks, where she made an impressive impact on the court. Last season, she started all 33 games, leading the team in field goal percentage, blocks and offensive rebounds, as reported by the Associated Press. The move to South Carolina positions her as a strong fit for head coach Dawn Staley's squad, especially following the departure of 6-foot-7 Kamilla Cardoso, the team's top scorer and post presence, after an undefeated championship season.
Dauda's journey to South Carolina has been marked by noticeable growth. She arrived at Arkansas as a McDonald's All-American but missed her first year in 2021-22 due to injury. In the past season, she averaged 10.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Joining a talented frontcourt that includes 6-foot-3 Ashlyn Watkins, 6-foot-3 Sania Feagin, and 6-foot-2 Chloe Kitts, Dauda is expected to play a pivotal role in maintaining South Carolina's competitive edge. Additionally, the Gamecocks have added 6-foot-5 freshman Adhel Tac, who joined the team midseason last year while recovering from a knee injury.
South Carolina set on repeating 2023-24 season
The 2023-24 season was historic for the Gamecocks, as they completed an undefeated season and won the national championship, their third title under coach Staley. The Gamecocks defeated Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes 87-75 in the championship game April 7, finishing off a dominant 38-0 season.
South Carolina’s success was driven by stellar performances from key players. Cardoso, now with the Chicago Sky, played a crucial role throughout the season, recording a 15-point, 17-rebound double-double in the title game. Other notable contributions came from senior guard Te-Hina Paopao and sophomore forward Kitts, who both delivered double-doubles in the championship match.
The Gamecocks' bench also played a vital role, outscoring Iowa’s bench 37-0 in the final. Freshman Tessa Johnson scored 19 points off the bench, and MiLaysia Fulwiley added nine points, four assists and four rebounds.
Looking ahead, South Carolina aims to continue their dominance with a strong returning roster and promising new additions. Staley, reflecting on the team’s journey, emphasized the competitive spirit and unity that propelled them to success.
