For over two decades, Jay Wright called the shots for the Villanova Wildcats. That will not be the case anymore, starting next season after Wright surprisingly announced his retirement from coaching Wednesday night. Wright is considered an all-time great in college basketball coaching and that's clearly backed up by the accolades he's been getting since his announcement.

Among those who spoke highly of Wright is UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley.

Via Matt Norlander of CBS Sports:

Here’s what UConn's Dan Hurley told CBS Sports: “Jay is one of the best coaches of his era. Over the last several years he has become THE coach to aspire to be like because he had the rare blend of achieving championships while not sacrificing his culture or his principles. …

Wright's coaching resume in college basketball is an impressive one, to say the least. He has won two NCAA Tournament championships on top of six Big East Coach of the Year honors, two Naismith College Coach of the Year Awards, and the AP Coach of the Decade (2010s) recognition. He's also a Basketball Hall of Famer, having been inducted to Springfield in 2021.

Hurley will surely miss coaching against Wright, and he must now be cherishing even more the fact that he won his last matchup against Wright's Villanova which was when he steered the Huskies to a 63-60 upset win in the 2022 Big East Tournament.
