Staples Center was busy last night due to the Grammy Awards, but that wasn't the only reason why there were more surrounding the hallowed grounds of the Los Angeles Lakers. Earlier that day, Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others lost their lives in a fatal helicopter crash in Calabasas, CA.

The entire music industry, many of whom have connections with the late Lakers legend, were pained by the sudden departure of the Lakers legend. However, they were able to squeeze in a quick tribute to him and Los Angeles native Nipsey Hussle during one of the performances.

At the end of the Grammy performance by John Legend and DJ Khaled. the two of them pointed to the screen behind them, and it showed the two late greats in all their glory. The crowd got up to a rousing ovation at the end as Khaled gave his dedications to Kobe Bryant, Nipsey, and Gianna.

Bryant is beloved in the music industry, and his confidence and skill in shooting hoops has been referred to countless times through rap music. There are at least 24 excellent references to Bryant through the 2000s, and his loss was felt by the artists who were also his fans.

Grammy host Alicia Keys gave a powerful speech that dedicated the night to Bryant, per Stereogum:

Lizzo’s first words were, “Tonight is for Kobe.” Then, host Alicia Keys began by saying, “To be honest with you, we’re all feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today Los Angeles, America, and the whole wide world lost a hero. And we’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”

Through 20 years in the City of Angels, Bryant showed everyone what it takes to become a successful athlete in the modern age. His dedication and hard work saw him have a career with 18 All-Star appearances, five NBA championships, one regular-season MVP award, two finals MVP honors, and five NBA championships. His impact on the sport will be felt forever.
