Despite the recent move that would have DeMarcus Cousins hit the free-agent pool once again, the Los Angeles Lakers have a mutual interest in reuniting with the big man this summer, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

While there was initial confusion due to a counter-report saying Cousins still remained with the team following news of his waiver — the big man will no longer be allowed to fly with them or sit on the bench once he becomes a free agent.

“DeMarcus has been here rehabbing and been a great member of this team behind the scenes that nobody gets to see because the only thing he can do is be a good teammate and travel, and show up to every game and have a good attitude,” said teammate Alex Caruso. And he’s done that and been one of the best teammates as far as just keeping everybody’s energy high and not too low.”

Cousins can still continue his rehabilitation from a torn ACL with the Lakers at their practice facility, but that's as far as what he can do for the remainder of the season as long as no other team signs him.

The big man has endured a series of wild injuries — first a torn Achilles in early 2018, then a torn quad in 2019, going down during his first playoff series and ultimately coming back in time to get a taste of the NBA Finals.

He then tore his ACL during an offseason pickup game, which caused his absence from the hardwood this season.
