The back-and-forth nature of the news involving Juan Soto's future with the Washington Nationals has apparently left quite an impact on the outfielder. As recently as a couple of weeks ago, the Nats outwardly stated they would never trade away Soto. Fast forward to now, it's widely expected that the two sides won't come to terms on a new contract and he could be traded as early as the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

Speaking via SNY, Soto got brutally honest on his feelings about the conflicting reports, indicating that he “doesn't know who to trust.”

I don't know. I haven't talked to anyone about how that change, or what was the mindset. But definitely, it's like you say, a couple weeks ago they were saying ‘they will never trade me.' Now, all these things that came out, it feels really uncomfortable. You don't know what to trust. But at the end of the day it's out of my hands what decision they make,” said Soto.

It's hard not to feel for the 23-year-old. You can easily get the sense that he's frustrated with how things have played out thus far. Soto has been sensational for the Nationals since making his MLB debut at the tender age of 19. He's made clear in the past that he'd love to continue playing in D.C., but the conflicting reports about his future have left him unsure whether he can trust the organization.

The Nationals have flip-flopped their stance on a Soto deal multiple times since last offseason, and it's clearly having an impact on Soto. The 23-year-old hasn't been his usual self at the plate this season, slashing .250/.405/.497 with 20 home runs and 43 RBI. His .901 OPS is the lowest he's recorded during any season, and it's easy to wonder whether the uncertainty regarding his future is playing a role in that.
