As part of an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week, all-time NBA great big man Shaquille O'Neal explained how an on-court fight with Charles Barkley was settled by their mothers — off the court.

The incident occurred in a 1999 game. At that time, O'Neal was a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, while Barkley was playing for the Houston Rockets.

Barkley and Shaq came together under the hoop after a called foul. Charles was fouled by several Lakers players, including Shaq. A quick shove from The Big Diesel threw Barkley into a fit of anger. As a result, he chucked the ball right at O'Neal's head.

Aggravated by the ball toss, O'Neal went right at Barkley. Both players went to the floor in a wrestling match. Coaches and teammates from both sides intervened in an effort to separate the two big men.

“Me and Charles had a fight, so he hits me in the head with the ball,” O'Neal told host Jimmy Fallon about the NBA mishap, via Yahoo. “And I'm like, ‘Charles I respect you but now I gotta knock you out.' So I lunge with the left, I wanted him to come on the inside, but he went on the outside, grabbed me, pulled me to the ground.”

A look at the fight:

During his appearance on The Tonight Show, O'Neal explained how his mother, Lucille O'Neal, and Barkley's mom, Charcey Glenn, persuaded the two players to make amends after their fight:

“So on a two-way call was my mom and Charles Barkley's mom,” O'Neal said, adding that Glenn, who died in 2015 at age 73, “was a lovely, beautiful woman.”

“And I was like, ‘Hello?' and she's like, ‘This is Charles' mom and your mom's on the phone too,'” O'Neal recalled. “I was like, ‘Yes ma'am, how are you?' She said, ‘Y'all need to stop. I already talked to Charles. He's gonna meet you in the hallway. Y'all need to stop and hug. Y'all are two of the greatest players in the world, we don't want y'all fighting in front of the kids, y'all stop that.'”

Nowadays, Shaq and Barkley serve as co-hosts with Inside the NBA on TNT. They still have their differences at times. For the most part, though, they share a mutual respect. That doesn't mean they won't rib one another from time to time.
