The Los Angeles Lakers just made a huge move ahead of the NBA trade deadline as they were involved in one of the biggest trades in NBA history. The Lakers now have Luka Doncic because of it, and they look like a legitimate threat to win an NBA championship. However, it would be beneficial to add some more pieces, and Stephen A. Smith suggested they take a look at someone who already played in LA: Dwight Howard.
It's been a while since Dwight Howard played in the NBA. He played for the Lakers in 2021-22, and his most recent team was the Taoyuan Leopards. However, Stephen A. Smith thinks that he could be a good option for LA.
“I will say this, though, and I haven't seen him in a couple of years,” Smith said on Tuesday during an episode of First Take. “I don't know how he's looking Windy [Brian Windhorst], but I'm finding it hard to believe, like, you know, all you need is somebody to defend the rebound. Why not look at a Dwight Howard? Why not look at somebody off the scrap heap? He's always in shape. He never looks out of shape at all. Don't get me wrong, I understand Windy, I know that we ain't seen him in a while, but Sharon brought up names like JaVale McGee. Just look, I would say this to you, Windy, look around the league, who's available? I mean what are we talking about here?”
Brian Windhorst couldn't believe what he was hearing. He does not think that the Lakers going after a player like Howard is a good idea.
“DeMarcus Cousins is playing in Mongolia, why don't you call him,” Windhorst said. “He's literally playing in Mongolia, Dwight Howard's going into the Hall of Fame, because he's retired for so long, the last time that he played was in Taiwan. Are you being serious?”
Yes, Smith is being serious. He doesn't think that Howard would need to do much, and he doesn't think that the Lakers have a lot of other options.
“I'm being serious only from this standpoint, you don't need anything from him,” Smith responded. “You just need a big body who can rebound. Okay, do something to play defense. You don't need… I'm not telling you that the man is going to be what he once was, okay. I'm saying to you, I mean, look around the league. What is there?”
Are we going to see Dwight Howard make a return to the NBA? It seems incredibly unlikely, but crazier things have happened.
