With the 2019 NBA Draft around the corner, there is plenty of speculation regarding how the pecking order will play out. It appears there is no shortage of confidence from Vanderbilt guard Darius Garland.
Garland is expected to be a bonafide lottery pick in this year's draft. According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, he feels he is the best guard in his class:
“I humbly say this, I think I'm the best (guard) in the draft,” he told ESPN. “I mean, I think I can do everything that an NBA team wants me to do.”
“The game is going towards a pick-and-roll and a scoring point guard situation,” Garland said. “So, I think I can do both of those really well. Just choose my spots on the floor and be able to show off the dribble.”
Garland's comments should hardly come as any surprise considering it is a common statement for budding rookie around this time of year. Regardless, there is certainly good reason for Garland to be confident that NBA teams feel the same way he does. He is widely considered to be one of the most talented all-around players in the draft.
Darius Garland had reportedly granted private workouts to both the Los Angeles Lakers and Cleveland Cavaliers. Rumors suggest that the Lakers had even “promised” to take him with the fourth overall pick. However, much has changed since then after Los Angeles traded away the pick as part of a package for big man Anthony Davis.
At this point, it is safe to assume that the first two choices in the upcoming draft will be forward Zion Williamson and guard Ja Morant. Despite the recent turn of events, it does not change his status as a projected top pick.
