In a move that sent shockwaves throughout the NFL, the New England Patriots released star cornerback Stephon Gilmore on Wednesday. Gilmore was set to be eligible to come off of the physically unable to perform list in Week 6 for the Patriots.

Following his release, Gilmore had an emotional message for Patriots fans.

Pats Nation,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce my goodbye to this great fan base. We enjoyed so much success together and you have been an incredible inspiration for my individual achievements. Thank you for supporting this Rock Hill kid and allowing him to achieve his NFL dreams.

To Mr. Kraft, the coaches, and the organization, thank you for providing me with this platform and allowing me to be part of greatness. Most of all I want to thank my teammates who lined up next to me every Sunday with one goal in mind. Those moments on and off the field will never be forgotten.

Sincerely,

Stephon

At age 31, despite coming off an injury, plenty of teams are expected to be in the running for the now former Patriots cornerback. New England and Gilmore couldn't ever agree to terms on a restructured deal for the 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year which led to the breakup between he and the Patriots.

The Patriots are off to a 1-3 start on the season but the defense has played pretty well through four weeks. Certainly getting Gilmore back could've elevated things even more but now with his release, that's an afterthought in New England. If there were to be a franchise to make a move like this during the season and not have it be questioned from the outside, it's New England.

Now, everyone will sit back and watch the contenders line up at the door for the former Patriots superstar.
