The news of New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman getting popped with a four-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs has once again put the spotlight back on trainer Alex Guerrero.

Guerrero, who is Tom Brady’s controversial body guru, has also been working with Edelman as well as Rob Gronkowski this offseason - to the chagrin of Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who is not a fan.

But in light of Edelman’s suspension, Guerrero has come out and released a statement which has seemingly distanced himself from playing any part in Edelman’s violation:

“I’ve known Julian since his rookie year and he is a phenomenal athlete who takes his training seriously—it’s disappointing to hear today’s news,” Guerrero said per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “Elite athletes sometimes work with multiple coaches and health professionals as part of their training. Here at our facility, we take a natural, holistic, appropriate and, above all, legal approach to training and recovery for all of our clients. And anyone who would suggest otherwise is irresponsible, and just plain wrong.”

At this point, it’s anyone’s guess whether Guerrero actually did play any part in Edelman’s PED violation. It’s certainly possible Edelman acted on his own volition and without Guerrero’s knowledge.

However, Edelman’s mere association with Guerrero will almost inevitably raise some more questions about the trainer and whether Belichick was right to be wary about his influence on his team.

As if the Patriots didn’t have enough issues to deal with, particularly with Brady and Belichick, this could potentially be another one to watch out for.
