Wizards of the Coast's collectors' series is getting crazier and crazier, as WOTC collaborates with Epic for the Secret Lair x Fortnite drop.

The Secret Lair Drop Series: Fortnite didn't exactly come out of nowhere, but it's definitely something many fans of Magic the Gathering did not expect. Wizards of the Coasts partners with Epic Games to bring a set of 12 alternate-art skinned cards with artworks depicting different landmarks, locations, and events set in the Fortnite universe. This makes Fortnite a part of Magic the Gathering's Universes Beyond product line, which has already previously added more fantasy-oriented IPs like Dungeons & Dragons, Warhammer, and The Lord of the Rings.

The Secret Lair x Fortnite Drop comes in two packages, with the non-foil versions costing $29.99 and the foil versions costing $39.99. The cards in the “Fortnite Drop” are re-skinned cards, while the “Fortnite: Landmarks and Locations” is a set of basic lands.

The Re-Skinned Cards in the Secret Lair x Fortnite drop are as follows:

Fortnite's appearance as a Secret Lair Drop will surely draw controversy in the MtG community. The Secret Lair drops that involved other non-Magic IPs started out with a collaboration with AMC's The Walking Dead, which featured black-bordered cards (e.g. can be used in play in most non-rotating MtG game formats) that depicted characters from the TV show. Fans' primary concern was the flavor of these cards, as it would have been possible for Rick Grimes of The Walking Dead to fight against Cthulu-like monsters called Eldrazi when playing the card game. Although the cards are functionally viable, many players don't like playing with these cards.

Thankfully, the collectible nature of these cards have made their appearances on tournament fields at a minimum, as actually owning a play set of these cards cost a fortune, and these cards usually aren't that viable in competitive play for the most part. Still, many fans are concerned as to where this Universes Beyond series of products could take their beloved card game, with many believing that this is a slippery slope that could lead to Magic the Gathering losing its identity. But hey, we've even got a My Little Pony cards and Godzilla cards before, so I guess MtG Secret Lair drops have long been in the “anything goes” phase.
