The Wimbledon recently decided to impose a ban on Russian and Belarusian tennis players for this year's version. Legendary veteran Rafael Nadal weighed in on the Wimbledon's decision on Sunday.

The decision by the Wimbledon came on the hands of the recent war conflicts featuring Russia. The ban specifically eliminates 26-year-old Russian Daniil Medvedev from tennis' biggest annual competition. Medvedev is ranked second in the world followed by eighth-ranked Andrey Rublev as the other notable men's tennis player.

On the women's side of things, it affects numerous players as well, most notably fourth-ranked Russian Aryna Sabalenka. Additionally, 15th-ranked Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and 17th-ranked Victoria Azarenka will miss out along with three more women inside the top-32.

Russian athletes have faced repercussions for their own country invading Ukraine, but this is the first instance in tennis. The ATP and WTA released statements regarding their displeasure with the Wimbledon's recent ban. In summary, they heavily disagree with putting any blame on the athletes for Russia's decisions.

The ATP and WTA have permitted both men's and women's tennis players from Russia and Belarus to continue playing since the invasion. There has been one exception though, as the athletes aren't allowed to show representation of their country's flag at any of the events.

Nadal, an icon of the sport, essentially re-iterated those statements of the ATP and WTA, calling it “unfair” for the athletes. Nadal currently ranks fourth in the world, including behind Medvedev which speaks volumes to his desire to speak out. It will be interesting to see if any other tennis athletes speak up about this issue and if anything changes in the meantime.
