WNBA superstar Brittney Griner finally had her trial begin Friday. She has been held in detention by Russian authorities after she was stopped at an airport outside Moscow and accused of carrying hashish oil in her luggage. There was a preliminary hearing earlier in the week and Friday was the beginning of the trial.

Russian prosecutors shared new information regarding the case they are bringing against Griner. Brittney Griner was not required to enter a plea, as that part of the process in Russia comes later. The prosecution unsealed the case, revealing specifics not yet known to the public.

NPR noted that according to the Russian state news outlet Tass, the indictment alleges that before traveling to Russia in February, Griner “bought two cartridges for personal use, which contained 0.252 grams and 0.45 grams of hash oil.”

A security inspection reportedly revealed the two cartridges from her luggage on a flight from New York to Sheremetyevo International Airport in Khimki. The prosecution also brought forth two witnesses, two customs agents, who were working at the airport at the time of the incident. The prosecution likely has three or four more days to present their case before the defense has its turn.

U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Elizabeth Rood reportedly spoke to Griner after Friday's hearing. “She asked me to convey that she is in good spirits and is keeping up the faith,” Rood said.

The judge has ordered for Griner to remained in Russian custody throughout the trial. The next scheduled hearing date is next Thursday, July 7th.
