Bradley Beal's contract extension should be a cause of celebration for the Washington Wizards star. The multi-time All-Star nabbed a gargantuan extension that ensures that he and his family will be set for life in the future. Despite that, though, the star finds it hard to be excited about his new deal.
The reason? Well, everything else happening in the world. During the Wizards' press conference, Beal opened up on his fears in the world, and why he can't help but be worried for his kids' future despite his current contract. (via NBC Sports)
“We have Brittney Griner still in Russia still,” Beal told reporters during the news conference. “Highland Park just lost six or seven lives. My hometown, St. Louis, from July 1 to July 5, there were 22 shootings. … This is a celebratory moment. … But it is tough when I look at my two sons right here. I have to figure out how they come up in this world that is unpredictable at this point.”
Brittney Griner's arrest in Russia has been in the headlines recently. Many of her peers, including Beal, have been worried for her safety in a foreign country. Currently, Griner has pleaded guilty to the charges levied against her, as the US looks to work on getting her back to the country.
Gun violence has been a reoccurring problem in the United States for decades now. The most recent incident was the Highland Park shooting last July 4 that took the lives of seven people and injured countless others. Beal also referenced his hometown St. Louis, which has seen an uptick in mass shootings as of late.
Life is more than just money and basketball, and Bradley Beal realizes that. It's completely logical for the Wizards star to worry about his family's future amid this chaotic period.
