The Montreal Canadiens were the feel-good story of the 2020-21 NHL season after making it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals despite having the least points among all teams that made the postseason, Well, the same hockey franchise didn’t make a lot of people go through the same sweet sensation Friday when the Habs decided to select defenseman Logan Mailloux in the first round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

See, Mailloux had already expressed his wish for teams not to take him in the draft after he was convicted in Sweden for sharing a sexual photo of a woman with his teammates without her consent. It should also be noted that Mailloux was not arrested though he was forced to pay a fine. In spite of all that, the Canadiens went on to select him 31st overall in this year’s draft.

Surprised or not, Mailloux reacted to Montreal picking him near the tail end of the first round.

Via The Athletic:

“I know I'd said that I didn't want to be drafted this year, but as a young man who wants to become a better person, I feel that being accompanied by the Montreal Canadiens organization will help me greatly,” Mailloux told reporters on Saturday. “They have committed to helping me grow as a person, and I thank them for this.”

Montreal likely knew the backlash it was going to get by making that move, and the statement they released right after explaining their decision isn’t helping brighten the optics for the franchise either.
