Following their disappointing 2017 NFL season, the Arizona Cardinals had some huge voids to fill after nearly cleaning house with the coaching staff. They managed to find their man in former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as their new head coach.

Now it seems Wilks has brought over another member of his coaching staff from Carolina. According to NFL Network's Mike Garofolo, the Cardinals have named Al Holcomb as their new defensive coordinator:

Cardinals are hiring Al Holcomb as their defensive coordinator, source says. Former Panthers LB coach is joining Steve Wilks in Arizona.

There is a sense of familiarity between Wilks and Holcomb. The two served on head coach Ron Rivera's staff for five seasons together and helped build one of the league's most formidable defenses.

While Wilks primarily focused on defensive backs, Holcomb helped with the development of linebackers Luke Kuechley and Thomas Davis into Pro Bowl players. He will now be inheriting an extremely talented Cardinals defense that largely underperformed this season. However, they still include the likes of star cornerback Patrick Peterson and outside linebacker Chandler Jones, who led the league in sacks this year with 17.0.

Nevertheless, Holcomb will have his hands full with the NFC West turning into perhaps the most elite division in the NFL. The sudden turnaround of the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers into offensive juggernauts has raised plenty of intrigue regarding the power shift going on in the division. If Arizona is to compete, they will surely need to find a way to slow down two of the more promising offenses in the league.
