It was a crazy last few days in the NFL as a slew of superstars signed some huge record-setting contracts just ahead of the regular season. However, one star who isn’t expected to get his massive new deal by the start of the season is Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Johnson and the Cardinals still “have a long ways to go to complete a deal,” which is not expected to get done by Week 1.

Johnson, who had held out from mandatory minicamp ahead of contract talks, decided to end his holdout and report to training camp. He remarked last month that he was “encouraged” by the contract talks with the team.

The 26-year-old Johnson is set to make his return after missing virtually all of last season due to a wrist injury he suffered in Week 1. Prior to the injury, Johnson had a breakout campaign in 2016 as he had 2,118 yards from scrimmage along with 20 total touchdowns.

Johnson believes the injury hasn’t helped him at the negotiating table, and it looks like that setback will set back his ability to land that big deal for a little while longer. He is in the final year of his four-year rookie deal and will earn $1.9 million this season.

But if Johnson has anywhere close to the year he had in 2016, he should have a strong chance of landing that contract. And given his integral role on the Cardinals offense, Johnson should be able to put up some impressive numbers this year.
