While more and more Black head coaches are getting hired in the NBA today, Boston Celtics swingman Jaylen Brown couldn't understand why it took such a long time.

The Los Angeles Lakers recently named Darvin Ham as their new head coach, which means there will be a record-breaking 15 Black head coaches in the league when the 2022-23 season starts in October. The Sacramento Kings also just hired Mike Brown to become their next head coach, joining other prominent Black head coaches like Monty Williams, Doc Rivers, Chauncey Billups, Tyronn Lue, Jason Kidd and Nate McMillan among many others.

Even though Brown is definitely happy with the development, the Celtics star couldn't help but ask why it is only happening now.

“If you’re asking me, I don’t know why it took so long,” Brown said when asked about more black coaches getting into the NBA, per Jay King of The Athletic.

Jaylen Brown's question is understandable. For a league that prides itself for embracing diversity, it is only recently that we've seen Black coaches take over. That is quite concerning because at least 70 percent of the players today are Black.

Fortunately, it is quite clear that the league is taking steps in the right direction. Hopefully, the NBA continues to foster diversity and see various representations in the league as it sets an example for other major sports.
