Although the Boston Celtics were eliminated by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals, the future looks very bright for the young team. Without superstars Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, the Celtics were able to pass their tests in the first and second round against the Milwaukee Bucks and the Philadelphia 76ers, respectively, and pushed LeBron James and company to the hilt.

The Celtics expect Irving and Hayward back next season, which would definitely make them a more terrifying group. But the team seems to be cooking an offseason transaction that would make them even more formidable. According to sources of Sean Deveney of Sporting News, Boston appears to be open to the idea of giving up some of their assets if it meant a higher chance of nabbing Texas Longhorns product Mo Bamba off the board in the upcoming NBA Draft.

Of course, the challenge is securing a pick that will be high enough to land Bamba. He could go as high as No. 3 to the Hawks, and there has also been talk that the Magic — picking sixth — are high on Bamba and won’t let him drop past their slot.

The Celtics have the No. 27 pick, but they have multiple assets on hand that could help them move into the top five of the draft, where the Grizzlies (No. 4) and Mavericks (No. 5) have made it clear they’re willing to make a deal.

Their recent postseason experience has shown the Celtics how valuable young guys like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are going to be for the franchise, so it’s safe to assume Boston is not entertaining the idea of giving up any of the two for a higher pick. But if there’s one Celtic — other than Tatum and Brown — who had greatly upped his trade stock in the playoffs, it’s Terry Rozier, who filled in nicely for the absent Irving. If the Celtics are indeed looking to trade up, Rozier could be part of the package Boston would be willing to part with in exchange for a high pick.

The 2018 NBA Draft will be held on June 21 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
