With Kyrie Irving out for at least a little while longer, the Boston Celtics have signed a little guard insurance.

Sean Kilpatrick played two 10-day contracts with the Los Angeles Clippers before they decided not to bring him back and release him to free agency. The Celtics will now sign him to a 10-day contract and if he provides enough depth, he could be signed through the rest of the season.

The Celtics actually have a full roster but with Irving going for a minor knee surgery on Saturday, the Celtics applied for a hardship exception which allows them to sign a player until Irving gets back from injury. Once he returns, they will have to release Kilpatrick or someone else if they decide to keep him.

Kilpatrick is a combo guard who has been in the league since the 2014-15 season and has spent most of his time with the Brooklyn Nets. He was waived by the Nets in December and has since played with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Clippers.

He has played 148 games in his career averaging 10 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. He is a career 41 percent shooter from the field and 33 percent from deep.

His best season with the Nets was last year averaging 13.1 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. In terms of his role with the Celtics, he will be a good backup and should see some playing time during his 10-day contract.
