Another big NHL trade has occurred. This time, it involves the New Jersey Devils and the Washington Capitals. The Capitals have agreed to trade goaltender Vitek Vanecek to the Devils in exchange for the 37th and 70th picks in this year's NHL Draft. Samantha Pell of The Washington Post has the details.

Vitek Vanecek is headed to the Devils. It's a huge trade by the Capitals, who went 20-12 this past season when the 26-year-old was tending to the net. However, as Pell notes, Washington seemed to want to move in a different direction at goalie, noting their plans to seek a veteran through free agency or a trade.

25-year-old Ilya Samsonov is the only active goaltender on the roster at the moment. Meanwhile, the Devils, who allowed the fourth-most goals in the NHL last year, address a position of need by bringing in Vanecek.

New Jersey rolled out the likes of seven different goalies during a 27-46 campaign, including Mackenzie Blackwood. A Devils spokesperson commented on the trade with the Capitals, via Ryan Novozinsky of NJ Advance Media.

“Gives us the stability that we've been looking for in net… To compete, and opportunity to win every night,” they said. “He's a goaltender who has played in a number-one capacity for a good team. he can push Blackwood and Vice versa gives us the depth we haven't had in a long time because of injuries and retirement.”

It's certainly a heavy NHL Draft price to pay for a goalie with just two years of starting experience. Such is the position the Devils were in, though.
