The Tour of Poland met a horrific incident, leaving rider Fabio Jakobsen seriously injured, and numerous people absolutely mortified.

At the end of the first stage held on Wednesday, the Dutch rider was thrown over a barrier at 80km/h. As a result, others crumbled to the ground in an effort to avoid making the situation even worse, possibly causing a pileup. Their quick thinking helped to stop such an issue; though that did not help Jakobsen.

This isn't exactly new for this specific venue. Belgian sprinter Bjorg Lambrecht died at only 22 years of age after falling and hitting a concrete structure in the 2019 Tour of Poland. Time will tell if these incidents result in major changes or not.

Nonetheless, the incident with Fabio Jakobsen happened during a battle with Dylan Groenewegen, who actually ended up winning the stage. (H/T Yahoo)

“We don't act that way, I just met the judges, he (Groenewegen) will surely be disqualified and we will see if it ends there,” tour organizer Czeslaw Lang told Polish television TVP Sport.

“It was an unfair fight and one of the riders suffered tremendously, two more and then a judge suffered as well. The other runners are pretty much ok.”

We'll keep you posted as more information becomes available from the Tour of Poland or elsewhere. Until then, we're hoping for a full recovery for Fabio Jakobsen.
