The San Diego Padres made a big commitment to shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr by inking the 22-year-old to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension this winter.

In one fell swoop, the Friars declared Tatis the current and future face of the franchise. Tatis said Monday he hopes to be remembered as a franchise legend.

“El Nino” spoke with Tony Gwynn Jr. and the rest of the FOX Sports San Diego team, saying he wants to eventually have a statue right next to Gwynn Sr., who spent the entirety of his 20-year career with the Padres.

Fernando Tatis Jr also said he had no interest in including opt-outs in the contract, saying he wants to stay in San Diego for the length of his career.

Tatis' extension is the final stroke in what has been a memorable offseason for the Padres.

San Diego acquired a pair of aces in Blake Snell and Yu Darvish, immediately bolstering the rotation and giving the Friars one of the best 1-2 punches in baseball alongside Dinelson Lamet.

The Padres also signed Japanese shortstop Ha-seong Kim while bringing back utility man Jurickson Profar, later adding bullpen depth by agreeing to terms with right-handers Keone Kela and Mark Melancon.

Still, after all that, Fernando Tatis Jr might be the headliner.

The electrifying star finished fourth in the National League MVP Award voting after hitting 17 homers with 11 stolen bases and a .937 OPS. Tatis was also the best defensive shortstop in the game by outs above average, proving there is nothing he cannot do on the diamond.

San Diego is intent on building a winner. The Padres will hope Tatis can be at the center of multiple championship teams.
