The Calgary Flames have one clear priority this offseason: extend Johnny Gaudreau by any means necessary. Thus far, they have yet to achieve that goal. With free agency set to open on Wednesday, June 13, the window for them to get a deal done before he hits the open market is quickly dwindling. According to Frank Seravalli, the Flames put forth a massive eight-figure contract offer that would make Gaudreau the highest-paid player in franchise history, and among the top earners in the league.

The contract offer is apparently worth in excess of $10 million annually and would run for the maximum-possible eight years. He'll easily surpass the Flames' largest total value contract in franchise history, which was doled out to Sean Monahan. Monahan is in the middle of his seven-year, $44.625 million deal. Based on the rumored numbers of the Flames' offer to Gaudreau, he'd earn well more than $80 million throughout the life of his new contract, if he agrees to the deal.

If that contract offer is actually out there, as has been reported, then it should be rather concerning for Flames fans that Gaudreau hasn't accepted the deal. That could indicate his intentions to explore the open market, at which point he'll receive interest from a plethora of teams.

Gaudreau has been reported to have been considering a move closer to home during the NHL offseason, with the Philadelphia Flyers, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils all having been linked with the 28-year-old.

Last season in Calgary, Gaudreau racked up 115 points, which was good for second in the league, trailing only Connor McDavid.
