After bagging a front-row position for the Mexican GP, Formula 1 star Lewis Hamilton shares his honest take on qualifying above Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

During the practice sessions, Verstappen and Red Bull were consistently quicker than the silver arrows, while Mercedes themselves admit that Mexico was always a weakness to their overall performance.

This is why Hamilton stresses that a front-row position over Red Bull comes as a surprise.

“Valtteri did an amazing job today and we both, and probably everyone in the team, is shocked we are on the front row because they (Red Bull) have been quicker than us all weekend,” admitted a surprised Hamilton to Sky Sports F1.

“Half a second, six tenths, and no matter whatever we did to try and improve the car we couldn't really close that gap much. So it's a real shock. I'm grateful though.”

Although Hamilton's teammate, Valtteri Bottas, qualified for pole position, a front-row appearance aids the Brit's chances of finishing the race ahead of Verstappen.

Mercedes as a team is in a good spot, as they are 23 points ahead of Red Bull in the constructor standings. Meanwhile, Hamilton, who is 12 points behind, is still gunning to overtake Verstappen in the driver standings.

With just five races to go, fans are anticipating a cardiac finish between the two championship contenders, will Hamilton win his eighth Formula 1 championship? or will Verstappen manage to snatch the title this season?
