Miami Heat All-Star small forward Jimmy Butler suffered an ankle injury on Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers and was forced to leave the game.

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra says Butler has a sprained ankle:

“It's a sprain,” coach Erik Spoelstra said of Jimmy Butler's injury, via the Sun-Sentinel. “We'll have to re-evaluate. I don't even like commenting after sprained ankles. You have to wait until the next day to see how a guy feels. He's getting treatment already and we'll go from there.”

The Heat lost to the Clippers, dropping to 31-14 on the season. They are still in second place in the Eastern Conference standings.

In his first season with the Heat, Butler is averaging 20.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.5 assists. He's shooting 43.9 percent from the field, 25.5 percent from beyond the arc and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line.

Butler was reportedly blown away by all the pomp and circumstance surrounding Dwyane Wade’s last home game with the Heat last season and told friends after the game that being able to see what Miami and the Heat organization are about left an enormous impact on him.

The Heat missed the playoffs last season, but all signs point toward Butler leading them back to the postseason this year. Hopefully, Butler’s ankle isn’t a long-term issue.
