The Miami Heat got the star they had long lusted after in Jimmy Butler after a multi-team sign-and-trade allowed them to give him a max contract after making the necessary moves to clear the way for his arrival.

Now after some time to settle, the Heat is hoping Butler will eventually attract other stars to play with him. The Heat hoped to trade for Russell Westbrook, but they were unwilling to part ways with rookie Tyler Herro or soon-to-be starter Bam Adebayo in exchange for him.

The Heat are now hoping Butler can be someone others want to play with because of his versatile style and his competitiveness, according to Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald.

“But Butler’s relentless competitive drive has gotten him in trouble in the past. He has questioned teammates’ effort and commitment to winning before, and that has rubbed some the wrong way during his previous NBA stops, especially with the Bulls and Timberwolves. The Heat welcomes Butler’s competitiveness, though, which is one of the big reasons the fit felt right for both sides.”

Butler is a perfect fit for the Heat's demanding and at times perfection-demanding culture. He is a perfectionist and a craftsman of his own body and discipline, which at time was ruffled some feathers.

Attracting other free agents can be both a matter of time and also a sense of urgency, though it must first start with Butler delivering playoff potential to entice others to join him.
