The Miami Heat currently have the second-highest payroll in the NBA, but they are expected to be major players in 2021 free agency.

As Brian Windhorst of ESPN notes, all of Goran Dragic, Jae Crowder and Meyers Leonard are scheduled to become free agents this offseason, which will open up significant cap room for the Heat.

However, Miami is expected to try and save its bullets for the following year, when it can potentially make a push for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo is slated to hit free agency in 2021.

Here is the thing, though: saving up for Antetokounmpo may prevent the Heat from locking up All-Star big man Bam Adebayo.

Adebayo will become eligible for a contract extension this offseason, and in order for Miami to ensure it has enough space to possibly bring in Antetokounmpo in 2021, the Heat may not extend Adebayo.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that Adebayo is a goner. The 23-year-old is viewed as a key cog in Miami's future, so this simply means that the Heat are in wait-and-see mode before making any rash decisions.

Through 65 games before the 2019-20 NBA campaign was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, Adebayo was averaging 16.2 points, 10.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals over 34.4 minutes per game while shooting 56.7 percent from the floor and 69.0 percent from the free-throw line.

Adebayo made his first All-Star Game in 2020, and he's in the running for Most Improved Player. Thanks to his leap and the arrival of Jimmy Butler, the Heat sit at 41-24 on the season, which is good for No. 4 in the Eastern Conference.

The Newark native, who played his collegiate basketball at the University of Kentucky, was originally selected by Miami in the first round (14th pick overall) of the 2017 NBA Draft.
