The New York Jets have officially signed former Baltimore Ravens running back Ty Montgomery. As a result, it appears running back Bilal Powell is likely leaving town this offseason.

There had been some speculation regarding the Jets backfield depth upon the signing of running back Le'Veon Bell. According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Montgomery's arrival means Powell is set to sign elsewhere.

It looks like Bilal Powell’s time with the Jets might be done. He was the last player left from the Mike Tannenbaum era. The longest-tenured Jets are now Brian Winters and Rontez Miles (2013).

The prospect of Powell leaving the Jets is certainly not too far-fetched. New York beefed up their backfield this offseason with the addition of Bell. While there was still initially a chance for him to resume his complementary role as a pass-catcher, that went out the window with the signing of Montgomery as the two share a similar skill set.

Powell is now set to test the waters of free agency for the first time in his career. The former fourth-round pick has proven to be a viable change-of-pace option throughout his eight-year career. Unfortunately, his production dwindled last year due to a season-ending neck injury. As a result, he finished the 2018 campaign with just 343 yards on 80 carries.

It is highly unlikely that Powell will find a starting gig this offseason. He may have to etch out a role for himself in a new offense as a potential backup for a team that is looking to lighten the load off its workhorse.
