The New York Jets have fired head coach Todd Bowles on Sunday, following the team’s 38-3 road loss to the New England Patriots, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Bowles’ firing punctuates another disappointing season for the Jets franchise. The team started like a house on fire and looked like it was going to contend for at least a playoff spot when they mauled the Detroit Lions in a huge 48-17 road win back in Week 1. However, that victory turned out to be a rare moment of success for the Jets, as they finished the season with a 4-12 record. They also won only once in their final six games.

The hot start and the subsequent failure of the Jets were a collective microcosm of Bowles’ stint in New York. The Jets finished with a 10-6 record in Bowles’ first year as the team’s head coach in 2015 , but only went 14-33 over the next three seasons.

Granted that the Jets were spearheaded this season by rookie quarterback in Sam Darnold, it seemed that the team’s front office didn’t have enough trust in Bowles after leading the franchise to its worst finish since 2014. Moreover, under Bowles, the Jets have seen three-straight 11-loss seasons for the first time since the 1975-1977 campaigns.

With Bowles out as head coach of the Jets, New York heads into an offseason filled with uncertainties and little promise.
