The New York Jets are still in the midst of a grueling rebuild coming off an underwhelming 2019 NFL season. It appears cornerback Trumaine Johnson is no longer a part of their long-term plans.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Jets plan to release Johnson following his disappointing stint in New York:

The Jets will officially release CB Trumaine Johnson today

The Jets made quite the investment when they signed Johnson to a five-year, $72.5 million contract that included $34 million guaranteed. The splash in free agency had generated plenty of hype for a potential resurgence from this team.

Unfortunately, Johnson was never able to truly find his footing with the Jets franchise. He ended his first year with the team as a healthy scratch due to what then-head coach Todd Bowles had pegged as disciplinary reasons. He was then demoted to backup by new head coach Adam Gase to start the 2019 NFL season. Although he eventually won his job back, it did not last very long after ankle injuries limited him to just seven games before ending the year on injured reserve.

Despite Johnson's struggles, he should still garner interest from teams looking to secure some quality depth for their secondary. Of course, it is safe to assume he will no longer be drawing a heavy price tag for his services like he did in year's past. Given his experience as a starter, this could be an opportunity for him to finally provide some bang for his buck in the 2020 NFL season.

Meanwhile, the Jets are left with yet another notable void to fill this offseason through free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.
