Everybody wants to see Joe Thornton win the Stanley Cup. At 42, the window for Jumbo Joe to lift the greatest trophy in all of sports is very slim, but at least he's getting one more season to try and achieve that elusive goal after signing a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Friday. The reason is crystal clear why Thornton is still not hanging those cleats up, but he did go ahead and briefly explained why he's taking his talents to Florida.

Via The Associated Press:

“I see their team on paper, I watched their team last year, I love their team and that’s it,” Thornton said. “I love what they’re building and I’m excited to be part of it. But everything is about ultimately winning the Stanley Cup and the Panthers are right there in my opinion.”

It makes plenty of sense why Thornton is packing his bags to join Florida, a team that could use a veteran to help unlock the full potential of a roster that's one of the youngest in the NHL. Last season, the Panthers made it to the Stanley Cup Playoffs but got eliminated in the first round by the eventual champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Thornton's previous stop was with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He had a great chance of winning the Stanley Cup a season ago with the Leafs but the team was also booted out of the first round by the Montreal Canadiens, whom the Bolts defeated in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Joe Thornton has 425 goals and 1,104 assists in 1,680 career games in the NHL.
