The New York Knicks are in the midst of a busy trade market for Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell. Amid speculation that they would have to include RJ Barrett in the massive trade package that it would take to land Mitchell, New York seems to have no interest in including their young, rising star.

According to Ian Begley of SNY, the Knicks do not want to include Barrett in any trade. The team is wary to trade a massive package for Donovan Mitchell because it is worried that the team after the trade will be too thin. However, if the trade does go down, Mitchell will most likely be teaming up with Barrett.

The thinking, according to people in touch with the club at the time, was that there wouldn’t be enough left on the roster to field a contending team.

I don’t know definitively if the club’s thinking as changed since we noted this earlier in July. But I don’t believe that it has.

For example: People in touch with the club recently said New York has had no interest in trading RJ Barrett in any deal.

The Knicks' refusal to trade Barrett is wise, as he is the most important part of their future. New York plans to extend Barrett, whose rookie contract ends after this season, though the deal may not be official until closer to the season.

Barrett averaged 20.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game last season. As he continues to grow, New York will look to surround him with enough talent to get back to the playoffs. They have already done so with Jalen Brunson and could pull off a trade for Mitchell.
