L.A. Clippers head coach Doc Rivers is one player who has, at one point, donned the jersey representing the New York Knicks. Some of the most important parts of his career were spent there, and there is still a place in his heart for the city and the organization.
Once you consider that, it's not crazy to think that Rivers, who has one year left on his coaching contract with the LA Clippers, could be intrigued by a coaching position with the Knicks if he were to leave LA, per Marc Berman of the New York Post.
But according to a former Rivers associate, it’s not far-fetched for the one-time Knicks guard to have interest in the team’s coaching job if Jeff Hornacek, who has one year left on his contract, is let go after the season.
“Doc enjoyed his time there,’’ the former associate said. “He respects the city, he respects the organization.’’
There has been some talk that Hornacek is on the hot seat. He also has only one year remaining on his contract. The possibility for a reunion between Rivers and the Knicks is even likelier due to that factor.
Rivers has coaches on his staff currently that have ties to New York as well, per Berman.
If Rivers were to bring along Mike Woodson as his associate coach, all the better fit. A Rivers-Woodson ticket would excite the despondent Knicks fan base a whole lot more than the current Hornacek-Kurt Rambis pairing.
Woodson, Rivers’ top assistant, was the Knicks’ most successful head coach since Jeff Van Gundy quit.
Lots of things have to happen for Rivers and the Knicks to reunite. But if there is mutual interest, there won't be much to stop the two sides from coming to an agreement.
Rivers is a good coach and has shown he has the chops to develop, which the Knicks have plenty of. It could be the right move for both sides moving forward.
