Despite rumors of a potential exit for Los Angeles Lakers embattled star Russell Westbrook, it seems clear that new head coach Darvin Ham isn't ready to give up on the former MVP just yet. As a matter of fact, Ham already has a comprehensive plan for Westbrook for next season and right now, it feels like Lakers fans can permit themselves to get a little bit excited.

Ham recently spoke about the role he envisions for Westbrook this coming season. The new Lakers shot-caller has issued a bold challenge for Russ, particularly with the defense he's expected to play for the team this coming season:

“We talked in our conversations and the biggest word we used was ‘sacrifice,'” Ham said, via Malika Andrews of ESPN. “I want him to go back to being a pitbull on the defensive end, and everything else is gonna flow from there… I want him to set a tone defensively for our team. Just get back to guarding, guarding, guarding… I want him to get back to guarding at a championship level.”

Ham is well aware of what Westbrook can bring to the table on the offensive end, but it is clear that the 48-year-old coach is focused on Russ' defensive abilities. It sounds like Ham expects Westbrook to be the Lakers' anchor on the defensive end, which obviously, is much easier said than done.

Defense isn't exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about Russell Westbrook. However, it is also clear that Darvin Ham is not your typical coach.
