After Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Doncic agreed to a three-year extension, worth $165 million, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka discussed the significance of his new deal. Pelinka released a statement about Doncic’s new contract, relating it to a monumental moment for the franchise’s future. He also spoke about the blockbuster deal with the Dallas Mavericks that led to Luka’s arrival during the team’s press conference.
While Pelinka chose Doncic by trading away Anthony Davis six months ago, today, Doncic decided to secure his future with Los Angeles, according to Pelinka, per Fox Sports 1’s Rachel Nichols.
“Six months ago to the day, the Los Angeles Lakers chose Luka Doncic through a trade,” Pelinka said. “Today, Luka Doncic chose the Los Angeles Lakers, and that is a monumental moment in Lakers history.”
The five-time All-Star will begin his first full season in Los Angeles in 2025-26.
Rob Pelinka’s honest admission on Lakers’ Luka Doncic extension

Lakers GM Rob Pelinka’s statement about Luka Doncic’s new contract extension felt genuine as he considers it to be a meaningful day for the franchise.
“Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Dončić’s future is with the Los Angeles Lakers. Luka is one of the game’s most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without compare,” Pelinka said. “From the moment Luka became a Laker, there was an immediate connection and admiration between Luka and our fanbase. You can feel it in your spirit when you attend a Lakers game.
“Luka is an absolute killer on the court, and blends that with a unique generosity and care for the community. Above all else, Luka will lead our franchise to pursue future championships, a goal that will forever define the Lakers,” Pelinka concluded.
Outside of All-Star LeBron James, many of Doncic’s teammates joined him at the press conference.
