Anthony Davis reportedly plans to opt out of his current deal to be able to sign a more lucrative contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Davis has a number of options right now, but according to a number of anonymous league execs, there is one clear path as to how AD will be able to maximize his next deal.

According to the Los Angeles Times, these unnamed team officials believe that Davis should be eyeing a new two-year contract:

Most NBA executives, who are not authorized to speak publicly on Davis’ situation, believe the seven-time All-Star forward’s best course is to opt out and sign a two-year deal with the Lakers that includes a player option for the second season.

This makes a lot of sense from Davis' standpoint, especially given these uncertain financial times in the NBA due to the pandemic. By signing a two-year deal with that player option, he commits his immediate future to the Lakers. However, he's able to keep his options open as well because he could then become a free agent again in 2021 if he so desires. By then, he could negotiate another short-term deal or a long-term deal with the Lakers, or if for some reason he finds a desire to play for another team, then he could also do that.

One thing to note is that after Davis plays two more seasons in the NBA, he'll be in line for a larger maximum contract because he'll have played 10 seasons. The superstar big man could have his eye on that new deal in 2022.

Davis just had the best season of his career, and it resulted in an NBA championship for him. He has put in the hard work, and it has paid dividends for him. Right now, there's no question that he deserves to be in the tremendous position he is in, as he possesses full control over his career moving forward.
