The Detroit Lions made a change at offensive coordinator this offseason which means Matthew Stafford has been learning a new offense. It has been a busy offseason for Stafford helping care for his wife who had a tumor removed from her brain, but he has had time to put his nose in the playbook and feels comfortable with it.

“I think I’m as far along as I should be,” Stafford said via the Detroit News. “There’s obviously a ton more to learn. Verbiage-wise, it’s completely different. … To be honest, having a new playbook is kind of helping. I’m sitting there going, ‘Man, it’s not old hat.’ It’s a bunch of new stuff. I think guys are doing a great job diving in and trying to learn.”

Stafford admits that he might be a bit behind because of how much time he has spent with his wife and kids this offseason, but he prides himself on being all in on the team when he is in the facility.

“I think when I’m here, I’m here,” he said. “There are maybe some times before practice, in the locker room, just checking in and making sure everything is OK. But when I’m out here, I have to be locked in. If I’m out here thinking about something else, it’s going to be an ugly day for the offense. I’m trying to do everything I can to be locked in.”

It has to be hard for Stafford knowing what his wife is going through and he has to take time away to be at the facility, but he still has a job to do with the team. It's good to hear that his wife is making good progressions and that Stafford has gotten his nose in the playbook.
