German Football icon and legend Lothar Matthaus, believes that Liverpool star Mo Salah has slimmer chances of winning the Ballon d'Or.

Salah is on a tear in the Premier League, previously capping a hat trick against rivals Manchester United. Fans worldwide have been calling the Egyptian King the best player in the world due to his incredible display so far.

However, Matthaus believes that Salah's struggles with Liverpool in early 2021 can significantly affect his chances of winning the award.

“It is quite possible that this will help him a lot in his choice of world footballer. But that was not the case for the whole year. In the spring, he and Liverpool had serious problems.”

Meanwhile, the German seems to reveal his favored choice over Liverpool's winger, to win football's most prestigious individual award.

“Jorginho from Chelsea has been convincing for almost the entire last season and played a key role in winning the Champions League and the European Championship with Italy.

“He’s not as spectacular as Lewandowski, whom I personally keep my fingers crossed for the most. This time, however, he lacks the international title.

“Messi won the Copa America with Argentina, but achieved nothing great with Barcelona. There are no top favorites.”

This upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony can be tricky as many deserving names are part of the mix. Spectacular players such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Jorginho are among the 30-man shortlist. However, regardless of who the winner may be, no one can doubt Mo Salah's brilliance this past year, showcasing a world-class performance for Liverpool.
