Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov has been awarded a new contract in arbitration for the 2023-24 season, according to The Athletic's James Mirtle.
Samsonov's new contract will be worth $3.55 million over one year. The 26-year-old goalie is slated to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Samsonov, a former first-round pick of the Washington Capitals, appeared in 42 games for Toronto last season and put together the best stretch of his career. Samsonov posted a 27-10-5 record with a .919 save percentage, saving 18 goals above expected, and is now the presumed starter heading into the 2023-24 season.
The Maple Leafs have had an eventful offseason under new general manager Brad Treliving. Toronto signed left wing Tyler Bertuzzi and added defenseman John Klingberg in free agency, even with little cap space to utilize. With extensions likely coming for Auston Matthews and William Nylander, who both have just one year left on their current deals, the Maple Leafs may not be able to retain Samsonov long-term if he carries over last season's performance.

Joseph Woll, who performed well as a rookie when Samsonov went down with an injury in the playoffs, could be an inexpensive option moving forward if Toronto chooses to go that route. Woll, 25, has appeared in just 11 regular season games. Matt Murray, at least for the time being, remains on Toronto's books as well.
Expectations are high in Toronto, as the Maple Leafs won their first playoff series in 19 years last season when they defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning before falling to the Florida Panthers in the second round.
Samsonov and the Maple Leafs were far apart on their prices heading into arbitration. Toronto filed for a contract worth $2.4 million, while Samsonov filed for a claim worth $4.9 million, as reported by Elliotte Friedman.
Ilya Samsonov is now the 29th highest-paid goalie heading into the 2023-24 season.
