A new mechanic is coming to MTG through Modern Horizon 3's preconstructed commander deck known as Tricky Terrain. This precon introduces the Everything counters which turn creatures and lands into every type. With a fresh new idea coming to the game, many might be wondering how exactly this deck would work.

MTG Tricky Terrain Commander Deck

Each commander deck in Modern Horizons 3 will come out in two variants, the regular and Collector's Edition. The regular Tricky Terrain precon will most likely sell for around $70, depending on the local game store. As for the Collector's Edition, players can expect to purchase it more or less at $170. Take note that these prices aren't final and could go higher or lower depending on the demand of the deck.

Commanders

Like other precons, MTG Tricky Terrain comes with two commanders.

Omo, Queen of VesuvaMTG Tricky Terraim, Omo, Queen of Vesuva

Omo, Queen of Vesuva is the first-ever commander to introduce the use of Everything counters. Essentially, she can turn each creature and land on the battlefield into any type through Everything counters.

Jyoti, Moag AncientJyoti, Moag Ancient

Jyoti, Moag Ancient is the backup commander to Omo, Queen of Vesuva. It spawns a certain number of land creature tokens depending on how many times the commander entered the battlefield in the game. The tokens Jyoti spawns perfectly synergize with Omo as she can turn the land creature tokens into every type. This means that mana ramping will be easier as long as Jyoti can summon several land creature tokens.

New Cards in the MTG Tricky Terrain Deck

Aside from the commanders, there will be 13 other new cards coming to Tricky Terrain.

Wonderscape SageWonderscape Sage, MTG Tricky Terrain

Wonderscape Sage is an efficient way to draw cards and abuse other permanents with Landfall abilities, especially if players can no longer drop new lands. The Moonfolk Wizard has a tapped ability that allows players to return a target land to the owner's hand. This should then allow the owner to draw a card then possibly keep the hand as long as the returned land was a nonbasic type.

Rampant Frogantua

Rampant Frogantua is a lowkey finisher card. The frog initially starts out as a 3/3 creature with Trample but gets +10/+10 for each player that lost in the game. Assuming players cast Rampant Frogantua after one opponent died, that's easily a 13/13 creature for only three mana (two generic and one green). Thankfully its second ability is optional as it asks the controller to mill cards according to the damage dealt by the frog. It's best to trigger the second ability if one is either mana screwed or is after multiple Landfall triggers.

Sage of the MazeSage of the Maze, MTG Tricky Terrain

Mana dorks in MTG are useful especially when a player struggles to drop lands. However, Sage of the Maze innovates what it means to be a mana dork as it provides two mana of any color combination. To add the cherry on top, its second ability can act as a finisher as it transforms the controller's lands into an X/X Citizen creature where X is twice the number of Gates they control. Gates are a land type in MTG and Omo, Queen of Vesuva can easily turn her lands into Gates with the everything counter.

Aggressive Biomancy

If one is looking for a board wipe spell without jeopardizing their own creatures, Aggressive Biomancy might be the perfect solution. Given players can pay a hefty amount for X, the sorcery spell allows players to create X copies of any target creature they control then the copies each fight one target creature they don't control. The best move here would be copying the biggest creature. However, there isn't any harm in creating multiple copies of a combo piece on the battlefield.

March from Velis VelMarch from Velis Vel, MTG Tricky Terrain

March from Velis Vel works similarly to Aggressive Biomancy. This time around, players will make use of their lands instead of creating copy tokens of a target creature. Every land of the chosen nonbasic type will become a copy of a target creature they control until the end of the turn. This works out perfectly with Omo, Queen of Vesuva thanks to her Everything counters. Assuming that the player can turn all their lands into a copy of a big creature on their battlefield, they can also easily finish the game.

Copy Land

The name of this card speaks for itself. Copy Land is an Enchantment that enters as a copy of a target land. The only difference is that it's still an Enchantment in addition to its other types.

Desert WarfareDesert Warfare, MTG Tricky Terrain

Desert Warfare's two abilities are both powerful in their own right. The first ability allows players to sacrifice a Desert land and then return it to the battlefield come the next end step. This a good way to trigger any Landfall abilities before ending the turn, possibly coming up with a game-changing play. Then the second ability works perfectly with Omo, Queen of Vesuva given the Everything counters she gives out. Assuming that all lands have Everything counters, controllers will create a plethora of 1/1 Sand Warriors creature tokens during the beginning of combat.

New Lands

Given how MTG Tricky Terrain mainly focuses on transforming creatures and lands into anything, many new lands are coming to the precon. Here's the full list:Talong Gates of Madara, MTG Tricky TerrainPlanar Nexus, MTG Tricky TerrainHorizon of Progress, MTG Tricky Terrain

Notable Reprints

Having new cards in a deck is always fun and exciting. However, another way to get that thrilling feeling is by owning some expensive cards. Fortunately, MTG Tricky Terrain will have some notable reprints.

Apex Devastator

If one is running a Cascade deck, one could easily find Apex Devastator in the MTG Tricky Terrain precon. The Chimera Hydra currently has a resale value of $33. This creature has four Cascade triggers which bring a lot of value especially if one ends up cascading key pieces.

VesuvaVesuva, MTG Tricky Terrain

Vesuva is an expensive land in the market costing nearly $18. Similar to the new card in the precon known as Copy Land, Vesuva enters the battlefield as a copy of any land on the battlefield.

Mana Reflection

Mana Reflection is an Enchantment card perfect for players who love running high-cost creatures. For approximately $14, players can have a card that doubles the mana each permanent produces. Having this card reprinted is a huge steal.

Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth

Considering how Omo, Queen of Vesuva can give out Everything counters, Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth isn't a super essential piece to have in the deck. However, it's still a great thing to be able to own one and to the collection, especially considering the card costs approximately $15. It goes for as much as $48 if one owns the Fangorn Forest variant of the legendary land.

Uro, Titan of Nature's WrathUro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, MTG Tricky Terrain

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is a great way to gain life, draw cards, and play additional lands. The card goes for as much as $17. On the other hand, the SLD variant goes for around $28.

Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

In case Omo, Queen of Vesuva is too costly to call back to the battlefield due to commander tax, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove is a good alternative to turn lands to every other basic type. Plus, controllers get to play additional lands each turn. Depending on which set one gets the card from, it goes for as much as $17.
