Tennis star Naomi Osaka was forced to bow out of her semifinal match on Saturday of a WTA tune-up tournament in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open due to injury. But, according to her statement, Osaka is fully expecting to suit up for the major, which begins on January 17th:

“I had a lot of fun playing here in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I have an abdominal injury which I need to rest and prepare for the Australian Open,” Naomi Osaka said in a statement issued by Tennis Australia, via ESPN.

“Sad to withdraw due to injury from my match today, my body got a shock from playing back to back intense matches after the break I took,” Osaka added later on Twitter. “I'll try to rest up and I'll see you soon!”

Of course, Osaka did win the Australian Open in 2021 and will be looking to defend her title. In fact, two of her four grand slams have come down under. This past year was a rough one for Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the French Open due to mental health concerns, while also losing in the early stages of the US Open. She also passed on Wimbledon.

Let's hope this abdominal injury isn't serious because it would be a shame for her to not compete in the Australian Open, a tournament she's enjoyed so much success in.
