Japanese tennis star Naomi Osaka has officially announced that she won't be doing any press conference during the duration of the French Open, citing mental health concerns as the reason for the decision.

Osaka took to Twitter to confirm her decision, noting that she “often felt that people have no regard for athletes' mental health.” The No. 2 ranked women's player in the world also admitted that she sees it often whenever she partakes in a presser.

“We're often sat there and asked questions that we've been asked multiple times before or asked questions that bring doubt into our minds and I'm just not going to subject myself to people that doubt me,” Osaka furthered in her tweet ahead of the French Open 2021.

The four-time Grand Slam winner also pointed out that she won't be affected by warnings of getting fined if she doesn't do her media obligations, highlighting the need to put athletes' mental health as a priority, too.

“If the organizations think that they can just keep saying, ‘Do press or you're gonna be fined,' and continue to ignore the mental health of the athletes that are at the centerpiece of their [corporation], then I just gotta laugh,” she added.

Sure enough, Naomi Osaka's announcement was met with mixed responses. A lot of people praised her for the decision, choosing her own health above anything else and sending a message to also respect the athletes. However, not all everyone is happy with it, as some pointed out that it is their obligation to organizations, as well as their sponsors.

Regardless of what other people think, Osaka seems firm with her decision. For her fans, they can only hope that it can help her be more focused as she looks to win her first Grand Slam title on the clay soil of Roland-Garros.
