The Boston Celtics knocked off the Dallas Mavericks in exciting fashion for Celtics fans Wednesday night, pushing their NBA Finals lead to 3-0 on the road in Dallas. In response, Celtics legend Paul Pierce appears ready to celebrate what would be the Celtics' NBA record 18th championship.
Celtics fans aren't out of the woods yet in terms of having a title locked up, but Pierce's tweet will make believers out of even the most ardent skeptics who may still be worried about Kristaps Porzingis' injury.
Pierce believes Celtics' title is inevitable
Pierce shared a tweet on Wednesday night after the Celtics' 106-99 win over the Mavericks, a game that saw Mavs superstar Luka Doncic foul out.
“Time to gas up the duckboats,” Pierce wrote on his X profile with four lucky four-leaf clovers for Boston Celtics fans.
Boston got 31 points from Jayson Tatum and 30 from Jaylen Brown, effectively ending the media narrative of whether Brown or Tatum is the best player on Joe Mazzula's team. Whether it's Brown or Tatum is essentially meaningless at this point in time as the Celtics are on a collision course with their 18th title and a championship parade in Beantown.
Pierce's comments were made in reference to the amphibious vehicles that line the streets of Boston after the city's sports teams win a championship. Boston has been called the “City of Champions” in recent years due to the success of the Boston Red Sox, Bruins, New England Patriots, and Celtics, and now the Celtics appear to have their 18th championship on ice, barring a miracle four-win run by the Mavs before they run out of time to get it done.
Fans react to Paul Pierce boast
Fans brought out the stats and boasts on Wednesday night into the early hours of Thursday morning as they shared statistics on X.
“Tatum is only 30 points away from Kobe for the most all-time playoff points before the age of 27,” one fan wrote.
“Banner 18,” another fan wrote.
“Paul Pierce turn me up!!!” another fan added.
Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and the rest of the 2008 Celtics are no doubt beaming with pride during this current run. Boston came close to winning it all in 2022, only to find themselves on the wrong side of an aerial bombardment by Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole, and the rest of Steve Kerr's Warriors.
This time around, there doesn't appear to be much hope for the Celtics' opponent. Tatum and Brown have taken their games to Herculean heights and Luka Doncic's supporting cast appears quite limited in comparison.
It might not be time to schedule the parade just yet, but Pierce's duck boats line actually seems pretty conversative based on how things have gone so far vs. the Mavs for Joe Mazzulla, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum's team.
