Derrick Rose is set to come off the bench for the Detroit Pistons this season, as rookie Killian Hayes is in line to be the starting point guard.

Pistons head coach Dwayne Casey revealed Hayes as his starter when talking to the media on Sunday, per Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free-Press.

The Pistons drafted Hayes, a crafty 19-year-old lefty from France, with the No. 7 overall pick in the Nov. 18 draft.

Rose started 15 of his 50 games for Detroit in 2019-20, his first season with the franchise. The veteran generally played well, averaging 18.1 points and 5.6 assists in 26.0 minutes per game, shooting 49.0% from the field.

Casey seems to prefer Rose as an offensive spark plug who can carry the second-team offense:

Fortunately, the 2010-11 MVP is embracing his role as the backup:

Rose echoed those sentiments on Friday when discussing the opportunity to mentor Hayes:
“It's been a while since I had somebody like this (learning) under me,” Rose said, via Rod Beard of the Detroit News. “The last time was Marquis Teague. I'm excited to see how hard he works and the engine and motor he has.”

Rose, 31, signed a two-year, $15 million contract with Detroit in July 2019.

The new-look Pistons begin their preseason against one of Rose's former teams, the New York Knicks, on Friday, and officially start the 2020-21 campaign with a Dec. 23 road matchup against another ex-employer of Rose in the Minnesota Timberwolves.
