Team USA breezed past Brazil for an 89-73 win on Monday, improving to 5-0 and obtaining the top seed of the 2019 FIBA World Cup, as they head into the quarterfinals. The Americans also notched a spot in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics after finishing as the top-ranked team from the Americas during group competition.
Point guard Kemba Walker and big man Myles Turner led the way with 16 points apiece, pacing Team USA, who shot a strong 52% from the floor, despite once again struggling from deep (32%).
The United States had its share of headaches against the Brazilians, still without one of their main cogs in Jayson Tatum, who missed his third straight game in competition after suffering an ankle injury in an overtime win over Turkey last week.
Brazil started the game out cold but caught fire in the second quarter from the outside thanks to sharpshooter Vitor Benite. Boasting a roster with NBA players like Bruno Caboclo and former ones like Marcelo Huertas, Leandro Barbosa and Anderson Varejao, Brazil was forced to play without its head coach Aleksander Petrovic, who earned two quick technicals and a consequent ejection with 7:10 left in the second quarter.

Team USA took an 11-point advantage into the fourth period after a Marcus Smart fallaway jumper that tickled twine as he released it with a tenth of a second left in the shot clock.

Smart would later limp off the court with an apparent leg injury a minute into the fourth quarter, as the Americans extended their lead. Ultimately the Americans walked away with another 16-point win, as the game gained some more flow in the last period.
Team USA is set to face powerhouse France in the quarterfinals after Australia got the best of them in the last game of this secondary group stage in a 100-98 high-octane scorcher.
