New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. has already made it known that he feels excited about the likelihood of Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur becoming his new head coach. But if OBJ still had some lingering reservations about working with Shurmur, then he better read Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs’ comments about the Giants-bound coach.
As Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports, Diggs delivered a glowing endorsement of his soon-to-be ex-offensive coordinator and believes Beckham will enjoy playing in his offense.
“As a player, (Beckham) does a lot of things well, so it’s gonna be a fun offense for him to be in,” Diggs said. “Because Pat knows how to get people the ball. He’s special. Good coach.”
“He’s gonna call plays that work for you. He’s gonna do what you’re good at. He’s not gonna make it hard. He’s gonna make it as easy on you as possible. Whatever you’re good at, he’s gonna let you do. That’s it. As a player that’s what you want. So whatever you do well, he’s gonna let you do it to the best of your ability — and a lot.”
Diggs certainly had a nice time in what is likely his lone season in Shurmur’s offense. He had 849 receiving yards and a career-high eight touchdowns during the regular season. He also had a spectacular six-catch, 137-yard performance against the New Orleans Saints in the postseason, which culminated in him coming up with the “Minneapolis Miracle.”
Shurmur also helped fellow Vikings receiver Adam Thielen reach All-Pro status as the 27-year set new career-highs in receptions (91) and receiving yards (1,276).
Beckham is a special talent who has been able to thrive in less than ideal circumstances in New York. But if Diggs is accurate in his assessment of Shurmur and his ability to put players in the best position to succeed, then OBJ has the potential to reach another level as a receiver.
